Panchachuli peaks eastern Kumaon region, near the Dugtu village in Darma valley Pithoragarh Uttarakhand

Panchachuli Peaks are a stunning group of five snow-covered Himalayan mountains located in the eastern Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, near Dugtu village in the Darma Valley. These majestic peaks rise at elevations ranging between approximately 6,300 meters and 6,900 meters, creating a dramatic and breathtaking mountain landscape.

The Panchachuli massif forms an important natural divide between the Gori Ganga and Darmaganga valleys and lies along the Gori Ganga–Lassar Yankti watershed. Situated about 138 kilometers from Pithoragarh, the peaks are visible from several nearby locations and are admired for their striking symmetry and beauty.

Mountaineering history records the first successful ascent of Panchachuli I in 1972 by an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) expedition via the Uttari Balati Glacier. The highest summit, Panchachuli II, was later climbed on 26 May 1973 by another ITBP team led by Mahendra Singh. According to popular belief, the name Panchachuli is linked to the legendary Pandavas, symbolizing their five sacred cooking hearths, or “Chulis,” adding mythological significance to these revered peaks.
